How Long Should You Meditate? A Guide to Every Session Length

Dear Fellow Meditators,

The question I get asked more than any other is a simple one: “how long should I actually meditate for?”

There’s no single right answer, but there is a right answer for you, today, in whatever five minutes of your life you actually have free. Here’s how I’d think about it.

If you’re brand new: start at 1-5 minutes

Don’t let the wellness industry convince you that meditation only “counts” past 20 minutes. It doesn’t. A 1-minute timer or 2-minute timer is enough to learn what it feels like to simply sit and breathe without doing anything else.

Once that feels easy, most people naturally graduate to a 5-minute session - long enough to actually notice your mind wander and gently bring it back, which is the whole practice in a nutshell.

If you’re building a daily habit: 6-15 minutes

This is where most sustainable practices live. Sessions like 8 minutes, 10 minutes, or 15 minutes give your attention time to properly settle, without asking for a big chunk of your morning.

If you’re trying to build a daily habit, consistency matters more than length. A 10-minute meditation every single day will do more for you than an occasional hour-long sit.

If you already have a practice: 18-30 minutes

Once meditation is a genuine habit rather than something you have to talk yourself into, longer sessions start to pay off. Durations like 20 minutes, 25 minutes, or 30 minutes give you real time to move past the initial restlessness and settle into something steadier.

If you’re going deep: 35-60 minutes

Extended sits - 35, 40, 45, 50 minutes, or a full 1-hour timer - are for days when you have the time and the practice to match. These aren’t “better” than a 10-minute sit, just different. I’d treat them as an occasional deepening, not a daily requirement.

The honest truth

The best session length is the one you’ll actually do. A 3-minute meditation you do every day beats a 45-minute one you keep putting off.

Pick a duration on our meditation timer, hit start, and let the number stop mattering the moment you close your eyes.

Thank you for reading, and may your practice - however long it is today - be a good one.
